"Exploring the Connection Between Soya Chuck Intake and Gynaecomastia"
Soya chunks are a favorite food for many bodybuilders and athletes due to their high protein content, which ranges from 50 to 52 grams per 100 grams. However, there is controversy surrounding their consumption, as some believe that eating soya can lead to gynecomastia, which is the abnormal enlargement of breast tissue in males. While this claim is debated, it's essential to examine the evidence and understand the potential effects of soya on hormonal balance.
Picture of gynaecomastia
Soya chucks and all soy products contain a component called isoflavones, which are phytoestrogens (plant-based estrogens). Both males and females have estrogen receptors in their bodies, and isoflavones can mimic estrogen and can bind to these receptors, although their binding is weak compared to actual estrogen.
As for whether soy consumption can cause gynecomastia, the consensus is that it is unlikely, but not entirely impossible.
Research involving mice, which have similar metabolic processes and physiological functions to humans, has shown that isoflavones do not lead to significant effects unless consumed in large amounts. This study suggest that approximately 18 to 20 mg of isoflavones per kilogram of body weight would need to be ingested to observe any notable impact.
calculation
100 gms of Soya chucks = 50 to 55 gms of protein
1 gram of protein contain 2.5 to 3 mgs of isoflavones
Which means roughly 120 to 160 isoflavones per 100gram which we consume per day
Which is only 1.7 to 2.3mgs per kilo body weight for an average 70kg man consuming per day
Gynecomastia is typically caused only when isoflavone intake exceeds 18 to 20 mg per kg of body weight. This means that consuming a large amount of soy products, like a kilo or more, would be necessary to potentially cause this condition. Who would eat that much soy chunk per day? !!🤔
Health benefits
